The trick is getting the profile to fit the core—this picture shows the case-hardened rim around the raw cam lobe. To ensure the depth of the hard surface remains 0.100in or more, careful indexing of the lobe profile is vital during the grinding process
The camshaft or cam profile grinding process is a special form of external cylindrical plunge grinding between centres, in which the grinding wheel axis machines the cam profile in a contour-controlled manner.
